چکیده

The recent assembly of the Anopheles gambiae genome included the sequencing of ~80,000 EST from blood fed (BF) and non-blood fed (NBF) adult female mosquitoes to help find the exons and introns in the mosquito genome. These two EST libraries provided an insight into the differential gene expression resulting from the metabolically intense task of converting the massive blood meal into eggs. Previously, 168 genes have been identified to be either significantly more or significantly less transcribed after the blood meal [Science 298 (2002) 129]. Presently, 435 transcripts are described; these are grouped in supplemental tables by probable function to facilitate public access to these data and to help in designing postgenome experiments in the biology of Anopheles gambiae. The electronic tables and supplemental material are available at http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/projects/Mosquito/Ag-ESTs.

Microarray analysis of genes showing variable expression following a blood meal in Anopheles gambiae.

A microarray analysis of 14 900 genes of the malaria vector mosquito, Anopheles gambiae, shows that as many as 33% (4924) of their corresponding transcription products vary in abundance within 24 h after a blood meal. Approximately half (2388) of these products increase in their accumulation and the remainder (2536) decrease. Expression dynamics of 80% of the genes analysed by expressed sequenc...

Blood meal-induced changes to antennal transcriptome profiles reveal shifts in odor sensitivities in Anopheles gambiae.

Olfactory-driven behaviors are central to the lifecycle of the malaria vector mosquito Anopheles gambiae and are initiated by peripheral signaling in the antenna and other olfactory tissues. To continue gaining insight into the relationship between gene expression and olfaction, we have performed cohort comparisons of antennal transcript abundances at five time points after a blood meal, a key ...

Reproductive physiology of Anopheles gambiae and Anopheles atroparvus.

When exposed to a human host, Anopheles gambiae started probing 4 h post-eclosion, but 95% successfully blood-fed by 16-20 h with maximal blood volumes of 5- 10 microl per female. When fed sugar, the 95% feeding was not observed until 36-40 h post-eclosion; sugar meals appeared to interfere with blood meals. Similarly in An. atroparvus, maximum volumes were 10 microl when starved but only 6 mic...

Ovipositional Behavior of Anopheles gambiae Mosquitoes

Mosquito eggs laid within two hours are necessary for transgenic (injection) studies, because mosquito eggs become hard after that period. Thus, in order to have eggs available within this two-hour window, it is important to understand the ovipositional behavior of Anopheles gambiae s.s.. In the present study, the ovipositional behavior of An. gambiae s.s. (Kisumu) was investigated in several d...

Mating affects egg maturation in Anopheles gambiae Giles (Diptera: Culicidae).

The effect of mating on egg development and the size of the female accessory glands during the gonotrophic cycle of Anopheles gambiae was investigated. Although females that received a measured meal of blood were more likely to produce an egg batch when they were mated, the increased reproduction was not the result of male accessory gland substances. Changes in the size of the female accessory ...
